South Yarra — A man in his late twenties was seen wandering away from South Yarra station yesterday morning holding an empty coffee cup with the quiet desperation of someone who has run out of good options, after every bin within a two-block radius was found to be either full, overflowing, or actively growing.
The man, who had finished his coffee somewhere between the station and the Vietnamese bakery, reportedly approached no fewer than three bins before accepting the scale of the problem. Each was topped with a small green-tinged skyline of matcha cups, several were ringed by their own overflow, and one had reached a point best described as "structurally uncertain."
"I'm not going to just leave it on top," he was heard muttering, holding the cup slightly away from his body as though hoping it would be judged separately from him. "That's how it starts."
Unwilling to add to the pile and seemingly constitutionally incapable of littering, the man made the decision to keep walking — past the station, past the second overflowing bin, and over the invisible but keenly felt border into Toorak, a suburb known for its Porsches, its unhurried quiet, and, crucially, its bins.
"You can just tell the second you cross over," he said, visibly relieved, standing before a bin that was not only empty but recently emptied. "It's a different tier of infrastructure."
The cup was deposited without incident.
At time of publication, the man had begun the walk back to South Yarra station, several bins remained in crisis, and one enterprising cavoodle had been spotted investigating the very bin he'd just avoided.
